This is an image for the narrator of the Mr. Gregory stories. Below is the opening from “Cezanne.”
… I was almost ready for my solo when I saw Matthew peaking out from the stage left door. Once again he had talked his way back stage to see me play and share a smile. The conductor would hate it. ‘It’s a distraction,’ he would yell. And maybe he is right. But I looked over anyway to catch my smile… only Matthew was not looking at me. He was reading something on his phone! We would talk about that later… He met me after the concert with the usual kiss and hug, took my violin, and let me debrief about the night as we walked to the car and drove to the restaurant. “Francis is mad all the woodwinds!” I said. “Furious. I can not wait to see what he does at the next.” “It’ll be interesting.” His voice was monotone and his eyes never strayed from the road in front of us. He was not really paying any attention. Oh, he made the appropriate grunts and sounds but his mind was somewhere else. However some of what I was saying would seep in so, I kept talking anyway. Until I notice that we weren’t driving to the restaurant. “…. Sweetie you are gong the wrong way,” I said.
